The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are one of Iceland’s most beloved attractions: Between the months October and March visitors to Iceland will be treated to dazzling displays of lights dancing across the night sky, known as the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. Every year visitors to Iceland flock to the remote areas of Iceland to enjoy the Northern Lights in all their glory without the interruption of light pollution from the towns.

To get technical, the Aurora Borealis is a naturally occurring phenomenon created when solar wind particles interact with the Earth's magnetic field. This charges the particles that release energy, causing the green and purple lights that dance across the sky. The best way to see The Northern Lights is on a tour guided by an expert ‘hunter’ of the Aurora Borealis - they will be able to tell you where, and when, exactly is the best time and location to see the wonderful light display. We recommend booking this trip before your holiday to Iceland to ensure your place is secured - be sure to speak to your travel advisor about booking your tour to see the Northern Lights. Patience is key when trying to see The Northern Lights - specific conditions (like a clear night and solar wind activity) are needed in order to be able to see The Northern Lights clearly; your Tour Guides will known when and where to go, which is why it is important to book onto a guided tour!

There are also a number of hotels that are ideally situated to see The Northern Lights; The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon is a popular choice among visitors to Iceland as it offers both Blue Lagoon access and excellent viewing of the Northern Lights from its geothermal waters, as well as a spa and incredible restaurant to enjoy. The Northern Light Inn is a cheaper alternative to the The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon - they offer Northern Light wake up calls, fantastic views of the Northern Lights and even free shuttles to the Blue Lagoon - though cheaper, the Northern Light Inn is a family-run boutique hotel that is a lovely place to stay whilst in Iceland.

For another unique experience, why not stay at the ION Adventure Hotel in Southern Iceland. This hotel is famed for its stunning architecture, wonderful lake views and mountain-top location. This hotel also offers guests a year-round geothermal plunge pool from where you can watch the Northern Lights!
