A twin centre New Orleans and Nashville holiday with jazz music combines with a vacation into the heart of country music. French history and black magic combines with guitars, boot-tapping music and The Grand Ole Opry.
New Orleans is filled with oddities and unique things not seen anywhere else in the U.S. The French Quarter is beautiful with buildings that have second-level iron railings around the porches and flower boxes overflowing with flowers. Carriages pulled by horses, yellow, blue and pink houses swathed in flowers. Mimes and street performers. And, of course, the famous Bourbon Street.
Bourbon Street is home to the world famous Mardi Gras. This bead-throwing, parading mass of revelers, jazz music and floats with giant jester heads is the biggest party in New Orleans and celebrates Fat Tuesday. Bars along Bourbon Street pump out the jazz music that has made New Orleans famous. Drinks flow freely and the atmosphere is definitely uninhibited.
Did you have something a little less lively in mind for your New Orleans holiday? Visit Jackson Square. Here, the St. Louis Cathedral stands like a beautiful lady. Lovely French architecture with spires outside and old New Orleans flags inside, this is a one-of-a-kind. See the papal flag. Visit the gift shop. Enjoy gorgeous stained glass and paintings on the ceilings that will take your breath. You can even purchase and light a small candle.
Jackson Square is a park-like setting in a city. Take a bench and do some people-watching. Enjoy street performers and artist. Buy some of the paintings. Visit one of the café’s and have a beignet and coffee. This is a lovely place to relax with the church behind you.
Take the streetcar and explore the Garden District. Beautiful antebellum homes line the streets. Wrought-iron railings, stately columns and second-floor porches add to the charm of days gone by. Images of sitting on the porch with a glass of tea, ladies fanning themselves, and rocking chairs all crowd your mind.
Now, hop on that streetcar and head back to your hotel. You need to pack up for the second part Nashville holidays
